Tips for Boarding your Cat

For most pet parents, the thought of sending your furry family member away for boarding can be a difficult decision. But with the right preparation and care, cats can have a safe and enjoyable stay here at Happy Houndz!

To help ensure that your cat’s stay is as comfortable and stress-free as possible, here are a few tips to improve your furry family member’s boarding experience.

Bring Comfort Items From Home

Your cat may be more comfortable if you bring items from home that remind them of their own space. Some good options are bedding, familiar toys or blanket, as well as a favourite treat or two.  If you’re concerned about your cat becoming distressed or anxious during their stay, consider bringing a shirt that smells like you so they can have something to comfort them in unfamiliar environments.

Food & Medications

Bring your own cat food & treats, and a little extra just in case. Often even cats on the most stringent of feeding schedules won’t eat their meals until later at night when the lights are out, and things are quiet.

If medication is needed during your cats stay there is no extra charge.

Most cats need about 36 hours to adjust to their surroundings, although the majority of cats are out and asking for food and attention by their second full day here. 95% of our boarders act like they have lived here their entire lives after about 3 or 4 days!

Our cat room has a built-in cat tree, an enclosed play area,  and a large window. Even the shyest of cats often find comfort in spending their time exploring the room on their own.

We are often asked about whether your cat will be interacting with other cats. There are a LOT of factors to consider:

Do you WANT your cat to interact with others? We would never go against your wishes.

  • The temperament of the other cats, as well as their owner’s preferences play a part in making that decision. We never know what the mood of our current group of boarders will be.
  • How are they interacting with each other through the doors of their condos? The cats can interact through their individual condos a fair amount here and oftentimes that is good enough. Our main goal is to be sure every cat’s stay here is a safe and healthy one.

*If the cat would like to come out of their condo, we make sure everybody gets their turn in the playroom. Sometimes they choose to sleep in our cat tree, sometimes they get to go to the office and take a nap on the chair with us or help with the office work. If the cat is more shy and doesn’t want to come out that’s ok too, it’s their vacation, and their choice!

We make a point of posting all our guests on our Instagram page so you can see how your cat is doing. It is truly our pleasure to care for your fantastic felines, and we look forward to providing you with the one thing that makes any trip away from home fabulous: Peace Of Mind. Thanks for trusting Happy Houndz to provide that for you!
